Price Fishback delivers the Noel Butlin Lecture

This year’s Noel Butlin Lecture was delivered by Professor Price Fishback from the University of Arizona. The annual lecture is the highlight of Asia-Pacific Economic and Business History Conference which this year took place at the ANU. The lecture commemorates the life and work of the late Professor Noel Butlin, a pioneer of Australian Economic History, who spent most of his career at the ANU. Professor Fishback is an expert on Roosevelt’s New Deal, a topic with special resonance in the current global recession. Drawing on his extensive research Professor Fishback argued that New Deal was a diverse set of programmes with very different effects. His evaluation showed that while some of them fostered the economic recovery from the Great Depression, others did not.
