Lecture series coordinator

Professor Fred Gruen was Head of the Economics Program, Research School of Social Sciences, the Australian National University from 1972-1986, and inaugural Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research over 1980-1986. Fred made a significant contribution to Australian economic and public policy debate. His endowment to the ANU has led to the establishment of the FH Gruen Distinguished Fellowships for researchers in the fields of economic and welfare policy. The FH Gruen lectures are being organised in conjunction with the Graduate Program in Public Policy, ANU, as part of the elective Selected Themes in Public Policy.

Next FH Gruen lecture

  • Speaker(s): Professor Richard V. Burkhauser
  • Title: Top Incomes and Inequality in Australia: What Happened and Why?
  • Time and Date: Thursday, 30 May 2013 at 5:30 pm
  • Place: Sparke Helmore Law Theatre 2, Building 6A, ANU
In this Gruen lecture Professor Burkhauser re-examines income inequality in Australia, focusing on top incomes. He argues that the 1985 tax reforms changed the way that profits and dividends were treated and it increased the share of taxable gains that were taxed. As a result there is less inequality in Australia than previous analysis has suggested. Comments on the presentation will be given by Andrew Leigh, the Federal Member of Parliament for Fraser, who is himself an expert on top income shares, and was Professor of Economics at the ANU before entering parliament.
