Profile:

Jiu Lian is a macroeconomics researcher whose work examines inequality, taxation, and policy design through quantitative heterogeneous-agent models. His research integrates structural modelling with micro-founded heterogeneity to study the forces driving wealth concentration at the top and the structural barriers that limit wealth accumulation among low-wealth populations. His work provides important insights for policy design that effectively addresses long-standing inequalities.

Jiu’s job market paper focuses on the racial wealth gap in the United States. His work innovatively endogenizes individuals’ crime decisions in the macroeconomic model to examine how differences in labour market conditions and incarceration risk contribute to persistent racial wealth inequality. Jiu’s broader research agenda extends to highly policy-relevant areas, including education subsidy design, wealth concentration in Scandinavian economies, and tax avoidance and audit policies. His research potential is reflected in his publications in top journals and the competitive research funding he has received.

Jiu has extensive teaching experience across macroeconomics courses, including delivering tutorials, designing assessments, and coordinating large classes in his role as coordinating tutor. He aims to foster inclusive, equitable, and engaging learning environments that support students in their study of economics.
