John Mitchell Background:
John Mitchell studied Economics and Arts at The Australian National University (ANU), graduating in 1982. He overcame many obstacles in his pursuit of higher education and was a recipient of a Whitlam Government scholarship. These experiences left John with a genuine desire to make a difference to the future of Australia through exceptional philanthropic generosity.
John has established a scholarship program for undergraduate students from rural and regional backgrounds at the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE), funded pilot research into a sustainable farming project led by Professor David Lindenmayer, established the John Mitchell Research Fellowship at CBE and left a $5million bequest to create an Endowed Chair at the ANU Research School of Economics (RSE). John’s generous support will have a profound impact on Australian economics, government and society as well as on some of the best academic minds at ANU.
John Mitchell Research Fellowship:
In 2016, John Mitchell established the John Mitchell Research Fellowship with a $490,000 gift to the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE) Research School of Economics (RSE). This will partly fund an early-career academic working on income distribution and inequality, taking them to tenure track. The Fellowship will support one of the best minds in the field to combine empirical analysis and economic theory to improve our understanding of the welfare and efficiency effects of inequality. John has pledged a generous sum to be paid to the receipient over a numbers. RSE will pay for the salary and on costs for the John Mitchell Fellow.
